There are many skills I have an interest in. Particularly sewing and crocheting (or knitting, still can’t figure out the real difference in the two!) It is something I have always talked about and FINALLY took a step towards doing something about it.
My first project was to make my own Christmas decorated table cloth. One reason being because I’ve always wanted to sew one, another reason being it is extremely difficult to find tablecloths that are appealing to my eyes as well as fit the dimensions of my table. I have a 60X60 table and many table cloths will not cover it entirely. I have even had to drape it with 2 tablecloths and that looks tacky!
So, I called Tara. I knew she had a sewing machine and from my understanding she knew how to use it. I mean, can it be that hard to sew together fabric for a tablecloth???
Well, it was! The trips to Jomar’s and Walmart was enough for me. That whole converting inches to feet thing and determining how much of the edges should “drop” gave me a headache. We had to spend at least an hour in each store and I usually mentally check out after being in a store for 10 minutes. Needless to sat that part was draining.
Once we arrived at the Hale house the fun began. After doing even more measurements, I was instructed on cutting the fabric…
We, then had to line up the fabric stitches and pin them in place in preparation for sewing. This was extremely tedious and I did not enjoy it!
Then, came the fun part, sewing. I have a little teeny, weeny, bit if sewing in my background. I took a class in high school and I remember making a pillow for Kenny with his initials on it. (Who knows where that pillow is now…)SO I thought I “knew” something, until all the extra stuff before sewing had to be done. I quickly remembered what I did not remember. So, I watched as she hooked it up…
After Tara was finished, she got me started with sewing…
And I was on my way!!!
I was instructed to make sure the lines were straight and that the design on the fabric matched up. Let’s just say, if you don’t look at it too close, you may not notice much!
It is not a completed project. I had to put it on the table for further sizing and plan to finish it within the next few days. But I am excited about this new adventure. I someday plan to make curtains, another tablecloth (with less detailed design) and maybe someday venture out into making clothes.
I am excited to be learning such valuable skills and blessed to have been able to sit under such a great teacher!
Until next time…
P.S. In the next few days, I will be receiving a crochet lesson from a coworker. The plan is to make a hat and scarf. We already brought the yarn and needles. I am sooo excited and thankful that the Lord has places such wonderful, talented and patient women to help me become a better well-rounded individual.
In everything give thanks to God!!!
