Migraines and Breast Cancer

A few mornings ago on Fox News, Dr. Mike was talking about the coorelation between women who get migraines and breast cancer. Apparently, migraines decrease womens' risk of breast cancer by 25%. Their linking the decreased risk to serotonin ( a chemical found especially in the brain) and how its effected by meds such as antidepressants. It's an early study and controversial but whateve works!

This caught my attention because I am a migraine sufferer, and I just got over the WORST migraine of my life. Usually when I get them I take Excedrin Migraine and they go away, or they may linger causing nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light and sound. Yes, I've had tests done to see what is really wrong with me, but everything always comes back normal. But 2 weeks ago...

It started on a Sunday night around midnight. I took some meds but that made me feel nauseous. I tried to go to sleep but it was difficult because I also felt dizzy. The next 2 days, my migraines were off and on. The medicine helped a little. I wasn't too alarmed beause they weren't that intense. Wednesdays rolls around and my headache is not only off and on but I have an increase in motion sensitivity. Moving my head in any direction felt like someone was banging on it and it made it very difficult to talk with the social worker that evening. I took meds and they did nothing. She probably thougtht I was crazy because of how I was acting and not really wanting her or myself to talk too loud. It's actually funny when I think about it now. LOL!

That night was a drag as well. I put Ray in the bed early, but I couldn't get myself together to go to bed. Everytime I moved it was followed by excruciating pain and the nauseousness never went away! Friday morning, I had the hardest time getting out of bed because it was just too painful to move. But I managed to get myself together because I had stuff in my car my job needed for a BBQ we were having that day. Of course I didn't have too much fun at the BBQ because I was in so much pain and I didn't have an appetite. Everytime I ate something it made me want to vomit!
That night was a repeat of the night before. So, when I woke up Saturday with the same symptoms, Kenny decided to take me to the hospital. Good 'ole Abington here we come!
They ended up doing a CAT scan (which came back normal!), giving me fluids and stronger meds to make the pain go away. It made me cold, groggy, and anxious, but by the time I left I was a little better. And by the end of the day, I was much better.

So if going through all of that puts me in the category of decreased risk for breast cancer by 25%, it was worth it, I guess.....

Wow!

And I thought I got bad migraines.

Have you ever visited a neurologist?? Years ago I had migraines so bad that I could not function. Motion, light, sounds, even smells made me want to toss my cookies. After going to Doctor after Doctor, I got a referral to see a neurologist who prescribed relpax.

As of late (that sounds funny) I only get migranes every 2 months or so, but they are no where near as bad as they used to be. I'm atleast able to function. Another trigger for migraines - which you may already know - are nitrates...found in many processed meats like bologna and hotdogs, and even some cheeses (although you dont have to worry about the cheese factor).

What is interesting is how they link migranes to lower breast cancer risks.

I hope they're right - Breast cance and almost every other cancer you can think of seems to make a special apperance in my family tree...

Great! Another migraine sufferer (not happy that you experience them, but happy there's someone else that knows what I'm going through). I have seen a neurologist and many other specialist over the years, and all the meds they prescribed did nothing. And since I hate taking pills, I'm not going to take them just for the heck of it!
I have cut down on processed meats except lunchmeat- I love it!
I have just come to the conclusion that there is no particular reason why I get migraines, they just happen.

But if it's a way to reduce breast cancer risk, what the heck!!! And make sure you get checked out early since cancers run in your family.

Have you been tested for glasses? Or maybe it could be linked to that time of the month. Or they come about when certain things stress you out. I recently had to get my eyes checked because when I look at things far away, its blurry. So of course now I have to wear glasses. I just got them today so I don't know how they'll affect my migraines but I'll let you know.

I had my eyes checked. My vision is great except for the blurs at night so I was given glasses , but I don't wear them. They feel weird and I don't like having something on my face, plus they don't stop headaches. A WASTE!

I also don't think they have anything to do with my cycle. I have kept headache diaries, and they are just random.

I do know I get "stress" headaches so i'm working on weaning out stressful situations in my life because they literaly make me sick. Maybe that's Gods' way of telling me to calm down!

Either way, the discovery to migraines are showing to be a lifelong journey.
